Ok, so after I hit the powerlifting show I was happy to just relax and eat whatever I wanted for awhile. There wasn't really any point in hitting the workouts the following week since I had Quinte's Strongest Man presented by RescindX in 6 days. I wasn't sure how recovered I'd be so I just focused on calories and foam rolling.
So I've whined about this numerous times....promoting a show and competing in your own show. It isn't a good idea. Mentally you just aren't with it.... I'll prove it to you in the next paragraph.... hahaha
So the night before the show Jason Howes (my training partner) and I loaded up the equipment in my father in law's truck. The plan was to just wake up, kill some calories then go set up with time to spare, relax before the show.
So I get there and my brain was scrambled already. I forgot a bunch of small details and I knew better.
The park we were at did not have the power working so they called in an electrician. We lost our laptop and PA system. LUCKILY I have great people in my corner. There are not enough words to describe how good of people Paul Vaillancourt and Sarah Leighton are. Paul was his alter ego "The Microphone Assassin" minus the microphone this time and a solid ref, Sarah had to scorekeep with just some scrap paper and a pen....no laptop or spreadsheets. Josh Montgomery and Jason Howes (Innovex Financial) were outstanding volunteers all day. Great people for sure.... THANK YOU!!
On to the show.... after Paul told me to fuck off and go get ready.
Car Deadlift- 0 reps. Ya know what? When the 4th strongest guy in North America tests out the RescindX mobile on the apparatus and says it's "Good"....better get a 2nd opinion for us amateur guys, haha Only 2 guys got reps here. 6 years with a 0 on car deadlift in competition. Boooo!
Fuck it, gettin' ready for Log Press!
Max Log Press- 3 Attempts
Everyone took a freebie at 220....easy. My next attempt was 260 but it was misloaded to 250, I drilled it. I felt like 300 was in me. Paul asked if I wanted 260 and forget my 250. I was cocky and just said "Fuck it. Next I want 280." My goal was 260-280-300.
280 was loaded and it was my turn. My dynamic log work is 260 x 3 reps right now, 280 would be a breeze. WRONG!!! I just couldn't punch it through. I started to panic since time was ticking. 0, I was out of this event. That would only give me points at 250 which majority of guys all beat. I was furious. Not to discredit the other guys but I hit 270 for a double on that log in training 3 years ago... I am better than that. I wasn't going down like this in my own show. No way. 2nd show in 2 years for strongman and I was looking like a chump. No damn way, see ya...I'm pulling out.
So I walk up to Paul and Sarah when they were alone and I was disgusted in my self and embarrassed. I told them I wasn't going down like this, I'm out. My home crowd and I was looking like a bitch. Paul's response " Fuck you. You're not pulling out. Shut up, get some water and be ready to drill next events". What do you say to that? He's a friend and knows what he's talking about. Away I went to grab some water.
Farmer's Walk- 280lbs x 75ft
14 secs. If I can pick it up, I'm good. 280 per hand and smoked it in 14 secs. Wow, not super fast but good for me.....plus it was on a slight incline too. My grip felt good for 300+.
2nd place!
Husafell Carry - 350lbs for max distance in sand
Soooooo many zeros here again. Most couldn't even pick it up let alone walk with it. I watched Dane carry it in the lightweights, he told me to pick it like an atlas stone. I said "ok" then forgot what he said and man-handled it up, tried adjusting my grip but had troubles so panicked and said once again "Fuck it" out loud. Walked 29 feet or something like that for another second place behind Alex "Andre the fucking Giant" Whiteman.
OPP Truck Pull- 60 ft Sprint, Harness and Rope
Light pull so it was an all out sprint which isn't good for me....some reason I am awkward when running. Coordination is brutal.... haha
Not sure the time but it was decent.
Points were tallied for the overall and I snagged a 3rd place in the heavyweights. Yeeeaaahhh!! Even after 2 shitty events no less!! So for my so-called hometown comeback I sort of bombed. Whatever....it was a good week. I wasn't happy with my performance but there is always the need to keep improving..... keep the celebrations short and keep setting goals. You'll get there.
Ahhhh, that week was over with 2 successful events. Time to chill, work on my weaknesses and get ready for the next strongman in August..... if I don't do the Ontario Strongman Championships in July. Then it's on to the Eastern Ontario Championships for 100% RAW in Sept. I WILL HIT MY 1500LBS TOTAL. All natural, all me.
Thank you everyone who is on my side helping me get to where I'm going. You can also be "Naturally Strong"!!
